“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people,” Proverbs 14:34.
Today, the citizens of our beloved country celebrate Independence Day, the day on which we remember the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.
While we have many blessings for which to thank God, now our nation is on a slippery slope heading for destruction, as a result of the recent ruling by the Supreme Court. That day was one of the saddest days in the history of the United States. The Supreme Court gave a new definition to the essence of marriage – two people of the same sex can get married.
Marriage is not a human institution. Marriage is a divine institution engraved in stone as a part of the Ten Commandments, which are the basis for all morality and decency. There are many reminders of this fact in the structure of the building which houses the Supreme Court of the United States.
Clergymen who believe and teach what is recorded in the Bible will not participate in performing and blessing any such same-sex marriage ceremonies. “We ought to obey God rather than men,” Acts 5:29.
It was not the privilege or the prerogative of the judges of the Supreme Court to redefine the essence of marriage. Neither is it the privilege or the prerogative of any other judge, nor of the voters of any state to redefine the essence of marriage. Any attempt to redefine the essence of marriage is not a sign of intelligence or wisdom. It only reveals the arrogance of people who are defying the Supreme Ruler of the Universe – God! It will result in ruining the basic unit of society, the family, which is also a divine institution.
It is utter ignorance and foolishness for two people of the same sex to speak of one another as being a husband or wife. It is utter foolishness and ignorance for children adopted into a same-sex marriage to speak of one or the other as being a father or mother.
The Supreme Court has laid the groundwork for the United States to become another Sodom and Gomorrah (see Genesis 18:17 through Genesis 19:29). They have laid the groundwork for the downfall of our beloved land. The Supreme Court has declared that living in sin in a same-sex marriage is legal in our land. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” History will bear out this truth!
President Abraham Lincoln declared April 30, 1863 as a day of national humiliation and prayer. He wrote: “It is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God; to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord . . . Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become . . . too proud to pray to the God that made us. It behooves us, then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.” (Emphasis added.)
We should be a nation on our knees, pleading with God for mercy and forgiveness assured to us through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son and our Savior who suffered and died on Calvary’s cross and who with His precious blood washed our sins away.
O God, remove from office those who have been elected and appointed to govern for the welfare of our nation, but have not done so, and give us new leaders who will heed Your Word: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
