“I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ Now therefore, be wise, O kings; be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him,” Psalm 2:7-12.
In this Messianic Psalm, these verses begin a divine announcement by the Lord’s Anointed One, who is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He declares a decree: “The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You.’” Interestingly, these words were written a thousand years before Jesus was born. The expression, “You are My Son, today I have begotten You,” appears also in Acts 13:33 and Hebrews 1:5 and 5:5.
The words, “Today I have begotten You,” refer to the timeless period of eternity. He was begotten of the Father in “the eternal today,” which is eternity, without beginning and without ending, which is beyond our limited comprehension and understanding. It is a matter of faith. “I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true Man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord” (Luther’s explanation of the Second Article of the Apostles’ Creed).
The expression that Jesus is the Son of God appears a number of times in all four Gospels. When the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would conceive and bear a Son, he said, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God,” Luke 1:35. The Father spoke from heaven at the baptism of Jesus and on the Mount of Transfiguration and said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased,” Matthew 3:17, 17:5. The apostles also clearly confessed that Jesus is the Son of God.
The clergymen and lay people who deny that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and also the Son of Man are lying, and are revealing their ignorance of what is clearly taught in Holy Scripture.
The ascended Lord, the Son of God, is at the right hand of the Father, ruling over the nations of the earth. On Judgment Day, when He returns to this earth, all who have rejected Him as the Son of God and the Savior will be condemned. A final appeal is made to kings and judges, and all others, to humbly accept Jesus as the Son of God and the eternal Savior of all people. To receive God’s blessing, put your trust in God’s Son and the Savior, who redeemed us with His innocent suffering and death, and who conquered sin, death, and the power of the devil by His resurrection from the grave. Kiss the Son – lovingly embrace Him as God’s Son and your Savior!
“Fight the good fight with all thy might;
Christ is thy Strength and Christ thy Right.
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
Thy joy and crown eternally.
Faint not, nor fear, His arms are near;
He changeth not, and thou art dear.
Only believe, and thou shalt see
That Christ is All in all to thee.” Amen.
